Summer camp starts for children with cancer in Boyle County

 By WKYT News Staff |

BOYLE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) – An Indian summer camp is underway in Boyle County designed to provide a once-in-a-lifetime experience for children with cancer.

The camp, held at Camp Horsin’ Around, is designed to let the children learn, grow, and build friendships while having fun being a kid.

Kids Cancer Alliance helps children with cancer all across Kentucky. They say this camp is one of those ways they can give the kids the time of their lives.

“We try to instill a sense of confidence and self-reliance so that when they are done with treatment, they can go back to their lives and their childhood and become confident people in their childhood and into adulthood,” Kids Cancer Alliance executive director Shelby Russell said.

One camp counselor also attended the camp as a kid and says he became a counselor to give back.

“For an adult that’s been through it to tell you ‘I know that it’s going to be OK, you’re going to be fine,’ coming from somebody that’s had that shared experience really makes a big difference,” Brandon Woehrle said.

Indian summer camp also provides a week for the children’s siblings to come out and enjoy the same activities.

The camp runs entirely from donations.
