Making A Difference: Camp Horsin’ Around lets kids be kids
Central Kentucky camp specifically for kids with special needs
PERRYVILLE, Ky (LEX 18) — Summer camp is a tradition for many kids, but for children with special needs, or compromised health, that idea can be out of reach. That’s where Camp Horsin’ Around comes in.
The 191 acre property spans part of Boyle and Mercer Counties. Camp Executive Director Julie McAllister tells LEX 18 that it is a place where kids can be kids, not patients.
Camper Payton Zulager has been attending the camp year after year with the Kids Cancer Alliance. He gets to spend time with other kids just like him, free from the worries of their medical battle.
“Everybody here is family, no matter if you’re a first year camper or 13th year camper we’re all one big unit,” he said.
“They get to be kids, they don’t have to worry about that. They’re all the same, they’ve all been through what everyone’s been through at some point,” said Camp Counselor Gloria Samaan.
The camp also has facilities to make sure no child feels unsafe.
“We have the Band-Aid Barn, which is a full facility for caregivers to be able to do complex treatments up to chemotherapy,” said McAllister.
